Where to look
Conifer and mixed woods on acidic ground, often among spruce needles.
What to notice
Chestnut cap; pale yellow pores often bruise blue. Brownish stem lacks a raised net.
Look closer: similar mushrooms
Compare with bitter bolete and other brown boletes. Blue bruising alone says nothing about whether a mushroom is edible.
