Where to look
Mossy conifer and broadleaf woodland. Fruiting depends on moisture; autumn finds are never guaranteed.
What to notice
Yellow, firm fruitbody. Blunt, branching ridges run down the stem, rather than thin blade-like gills.
Look closer: similar mushrooms
False chanterelle has thin crowded gills. Poisonous jack-o’-lantern mushrooms are another reason never to rely on colour.
