Where to look
Acidic woodland, especially spruce edges. A good species to study on autumn walks.
What to notice
Brown cap; pale netting on the stout stem. Pores start white, then turn yellow-olive; flesh stays white when cut.
Look closer: similar mushrooms
Bitter bolete has pores becoming pink and darker netting. Never taste an unknown mushroom to identify it.
