A little wisdom for the woods
For cool mornings, mossy paths and the last warm sip from your flask.
Read the trees first
Around Janov, Hrabětice and Bedřichov, use the trees as your first clue. Spruce milkcaps are associated with spruce; porcini and bay boletes suit conifer and mixed-woodland study. Beech and birch add different neighbours. A green carpet of moss alone cannot tell you which mushroom you have.
Get to know itRain is a clue, not a promise
For late September and early October, consider recent moisture together with temperature. One rainy afternoon does not guarantee a flush. Compare sheltered woodland with exposed edges, and check the mountain forecast for Bedřichov and Severák rather than relying only on weather down in Jablonec.
